Sir Quilliam - Sponsor
Quilliam is a male, African crested porcupine,
The crested porcupine also known as the African crested porcupine, is a species of rodent in the family Hystricidae found in Italy, North Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa.
The black & white quills along the head and back can be raised into a crest, thus the name.
The word porcupine means “quill pig” in Latin; however, porcupines are large rodents and have no relation to pigs. Porcupines are the largest and heaviest of all African rodents.
Quilliams legs are short and sturdy, and each foot has five toes, all equipped with powerful claws. His most recognizable feature is, of course, his quills. Quill length varies on different parts of the body, ranging from 2.5 to 30.5 centimeters (1 to 12 inches). Usually, the quills lie flat against the body, but if danger threatens, they raise and spread them. Scales on quill tips lodge in the skin like fishhooks and are difficult to pull out. New quills grow in to replace lost ones. They weigh approximately 50 lbs as an adult and are about 30” in length, and have very poor vision. They are also notoriously good diggers.
Quilliam was born on February 17th 2020. He found his way to Ashburns because Lake Tobias acquired Quilliam's mother along with him and his twin sister Cruella. He and his sister were the first litter their mother ever had and unfortunately she was not interested in parenting either one of them.
The timing of Lake Tobias needing someone and Ashburn's Animals having porcupine space availability was amazing. There was no hesitation to care for a baby in need.
Quilliam has settled in here at the farm and is very loving and snuggly and loves to eat! He is a herbivore so he enjoys many fruits and veggies!
Sponsoring an animal here at Ashburn's is a big deal, and we're happy that you're considering it. To sponsor an animal means to help it stay happy and healthy on its journey to finding a "fur"-ever home! Your sponsorship donation will go towards the animal's daily care including feed, housing (like bedding), treats and enrichment, as well as veterinary care.
In addition, you get to become that animal's best friend! With your sponsorship, you will recieve a certificate of sponsorship with the animal's picture and autograph, opportunities to meet and interact with the animal, and high priority when registering for events at the farm!
